When I created South Coast Surf Academy in 2001, I started with only 8 soft surfboards and 20 wetsuits.  We now have 60 surfboards and 200 wetsuits!

South Coast Surf Academy was developed after I noticed a hole in the market.  I was working with Victor Harbor Aquatics Centre teaching surfing and other aquatics activities to school children during school hours.  While on the beach, all the instructors including myself would be asked about surf lessons on the weekends, during school holidays, and after school or work.  VH Aquatics being annexed under the education department was and is only able to cater for school students in school hours. At the time, there were no private surf schools in Middleton to recommend.  South Coast Surf Academy was born.

Established at the end of 2001, I juggled the two positions for a few years, working for Victor Aquatics and as SCSA business owner/operator, but by 2005 it was getting to be too much so I left Victor Aquatics to focus solely on SCSA.  At the end of 2005, Meg joined me in the business. In early 2006, we became a Surfing Australia licensed surf school and also secured support from Quiksilver/Roxy in providing student and instructor wetsuits.

From our humble beginnings to where we are today, and after the thousands of people I have taught since starting my surf coaching career, I am still as passionate today about teaching surfing and water safety and watching people stand up for the first time as I was in 1997.  And I’m proud to have the title of South Australia’s longest running owner established and operated surf school.
